It’s not about the bike

I’m back home after a three-day cycling weekend. While the trip’s main purpose was to ride bikes – specifically at the Tenterfield Gravel n Granite – the weekend was much more than that.

Finish Line 1300 1600 RCPixEvery time a bunch of cyclists get together it’s bound to be fun. I was lucky to run into friends that I have not seen for a long time. Some of them I ran into before the event on the street, at our hotel, and of course, milling around at the start and finish. Some I even bumped into on the course after they decided to ride their bike off the side of the road – what were you thinking Carpy?!! It’s always great to reconnect with these people in our happy place – in, on or around our bikes.

I’m so lucky to have made and nurtured some great friendships on the bike. On and off, but mostly on, I have been riding with a core group of people for over 20 years.  Sure, faces come and go, but together we’ve spent countless hours together as we’ve all navigated our way through “life” and all the challenges and opportunities it throws up over 20-plus years.

This weekend our little cycling group and some of their partners travelled the 4 hours to Tenterfield to ride. We shared meals, drinks, bushwalks, more meals, numerous coffees and even beds (that’s another story).

Lots of laughs, lots of good times, great conversation and many memories were shared over three days. The fact that we rode our bikes for a few hours is almost an afterthought.

I’m so grateful for my cycling community and the times we share on and off the bike.

Let’s keep the pedals turning and the adventures coming!
